FULL DAY GUIDED SAFARI DRIVE TO KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
DISCOVER THE UNTAMED KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
A full day Guided Safari Drive to Kruger National Park is a Lowveld classic activity. When making an accommodation reservation with us we can also organise this guided safari tour with our trusted Safari Tour Operators.
DAY TOURS IN SOUTHERN KRUGER PARK
The south of Kruger National Park, between the Sabie River and Crocodile Rivers, has the highest density of big game and your chances of seeing the Big 5 in one day are good but not guaranteed. For nature lovers consider doing several visits to Kruger National Park to see the Big 5 and more wildlife but also discover different areas and landscapes of the park. We love self driving in Kruger National Park and recommend doing guided and self driving if possible.
HOW MUCH IS A FULLY DAY GUIDED SAFARI TO KRUGER PARK?
Full Day Kruger Safaris are approximately R2’450 per person. A 2 person minimum applies or pay the single person supplement. As prices vary, please send us an enquiry to confirm the price and availability with our tour operator.
CHOOSE AN OPEN SAFARI VEHICLE FOR AN AUTHENTIC SAFARI EXPERIENCE
Full Day Safaris are usually done in an Open Safari Vehicles which offer a higher vantage point and expose you to the sights and smells of the South African Bush. Should you prefer an air-conditioned touring vehicle this can be organised as well (depending on availability).
EXAMPLE ITINERARY FOR FULL DAY GUIDED SAFARI FROM ILANDA GUEST HOUSE
The exact itinerary depends on the guide, your preferences and the chatter on the radio (where guides share their sightings between each other). Nonetheless here is an outline of what you can expect during a Full Day Safari in Kruger National Park.
PICK UP AT ILANDA GUEST HOUSE
The guide will pick you up early in the morning about 30 minutes before the park opens. Early morning is where animals are the most active and good chances of seeing nocturnal and crepuscular animals like lions, leopards and hyenas. Birdlife will be in full swing and you can enjoy their morning chorus. Be warned that winter morning can be quite cold (but pleasantly toasty during the day) so be well dressed in layers! Your guide will also provide blankets.
If you have booked breakfast with us, we will organise a breakfast pack instead of our sit-down breakfast. The breakfast pack will be brought to your room the evening before and can be stored in your in-room fridge.
Once you’ve entered the park, either at Numbi Gate or Phabeni Gate, sit-back and relax while the guide takes you to the best places to see wildlife and the most scenic areas.
Typical tours will take you toward Skukuza at the confluence of the Sabie and Sand Rivers. On the way stops at Shitlave Dam and Transport Dam will guarantee hippo sightings and animals coming to drink.
Keep an eye out for Klipspringer hanging out on the rocks everytime you go past a Koppie On your way to Skukuza you’ll pass the mighty Mathekenyane granite outcrop where you can step out of the Safari Vehicle and enjoy the 360 degrees view of the lowveld bush.
Shortly before Skukuza, keep an eye out for the beautiful Sjambok Trees. If you are staying with us take a stroll around the guest house to see a Sjambok Tree up close and recognise them once inside Kruger National Park.
The area between Skukuza, Lower Sabie and Tshokwane Picnic Site is among the most productive and beautiful in the park. The guide will decide the best routes but highlights include the Sand River low water bridges and the Sabie River Bridge.
If you stop at Skukuza you MUST try the milkshakes. You cannot go wrong with the Coffee Milkshake at Cattle Baron’s Milkshake Bar (it usually isn’t on the menu but do ask).
The Tshokwane area is usually good for wild dogs and the viewpoints at Orpen and Nkumbe Viewing Site allow you to get out of the vehicles and enjoy dramatic views. Birders should ask for a stop at Leupan where Dwarf Bittern, Lesser Moorhen and Pygmy Geese are some of the specials which can be found when conditions are good (enough water from summer rainfall).
Lunch may be at Skukuza or Lower Sabie, though Tshokwane might be a more classic Kruger National Park lunch spot.
At Tshokwane keep an eye and ears peeled for the Mourning Laughing Dive in the trees, this is a classic spot to find them. Listen for their distinctive call and confirm identification with their beautiful eyering.
Afternoon drives will continue along the Sabie River in a westerly direction making your way to the exit for closing time between 1700 and 1800 depending on the season and last light. This is a good time for predators starting the crepuscular with highest chances of Leopard, Lion and Hyena sighting.
